A&M vs Arkansas St.
The whole family went out to dinner at Cool River this evening. Our local A&M Club put this football watch party together for the area Aggies.

My wife snapped this photo of me and my daughter.

Sobig Leader Board
I decided to write a little perl script to count which computers (by their IP address) were sending the most copies of the sobig virus to my mail server. My results are posted below.

Novell tells SCO to shut up
Novell CTO tells SCO to put up or shut up
SourceWars, Episode 14: Novell's chief technology officer - and steely-toed Linux evangelist to boot - Alan Nugent has tossed another broadside into the litigious pursuits of SCO, saying that the Utah-based vendor should justify its claims as fact - or quit moaning.
There is so much going on with the SCO vs Everyone that I decided to stuff these articles in a new category, SCO Litigation.

SCO Stuff
Rob Landly and Eric Raymond are at it again [Halloween IX: It Ain't Necessarily SCO].
The amended SCO complaint against IBM filed on 16 June 2003 is, like its predecessor, a tissue of lies, deliberate distortions, and flimflam. Unlike its predecessor, this amended complaint has been brought to you by the generosity of Microsoft, who (on the evidence of SCO's 10-Q SEC filings) dropped at least six million dollars on SCO (plus a promise of five million more over the next three quarters) to help it make trouble for Linux.SCO, having willingly made itself a sock puppet for the boys in Redmond, therefore becomes the first company other than Microsoft to have its utterances admitted to the gallery of infamy that is the Halloween Documents.

Wireless Tivo
Getting my series 2 tivo on the network was painless. I did run cat 5 cable and use tivo's recommended usb nic.
Another tivo enthusiast shares his frustration with setting up his series 2 with a wi-fi usb nic. He did succeed in the end.

UPDATE 30 AUG 2003
Tivo puts new wi-fi instructions up on their web site.
UPDATE 5 OCT 2005
If you are looking for wireless telephone extenders, which basically allows you to share your phone line without having to run a telephone cord along your living room floor, I found two models on Amazon that might work for you.
1) Phonex PX-441
2) RCA RC930
If you are searching for a usb based cat5 network adapter, I went with the Linksys model. Weakess has different USB ethernet adapters that are guaranteed to work with your tivo.

Kickoff
In a few days the Aggies will take on Arkansas State at Kyle Field (82,600) on Saturday, 30 August 2003. This year the Aggies have a new coaching staff lead by head coach, Dennis Franchione. Since I don't have season tickets this year, I will have to figure out which restaurant/bar in Austin will be showing the game on Pay-Per-View. Gig'em.
In preparation for the season, I watched Rudy this afternoon, which is one of my favorite sport films. I still get teary-eyed watching it.

Am I Dreaming?
I was stunned when I came across this article, "Microsoft Urges Users Not to Use Windows on the Internet." Am I'm dreaming?
Summary Microsoft's Web site was recently urging users to purchase additional hardware or software - or keep computers using the Windows OS off of the Internet altogether. Steve Suehring makes no claim that Linux has all of the answers for security. "However, attacks can be prevented much easier with Linux," he writes.
I guess that's why I run linux on my boxes with interfaces exposed to the Internet and Windows NT safely behind firewalls for file, print, and database.

Qmail Scanner
Qmail-Scanner has been providing my qmail server excellent protection today from the onslaught on a new SOBIG virus. Mine is configured to quarantine all emails with win32 executable attachments (.exe, .pif, .bat, .com, .lnk, .scr, .vbs, .jar, .shs, .scn).
Since 3:00pm today, Qmail-Scanner caught over 100 emails on my server with executable extensions. What a great piece of software.

Closet Cleaning
I finally got around to registering some of my books with Book Crossing. I have collected about 40-60 paperback books since elementary school. It's time to do some house cleaning and free these puppies.
I don't think I'm going to part with my LOTR series, nor my Dragon Lance Chronicles. I have registered some Grisham novels and general sci-fi. I'm interested to see, if anyone will really find the books and post something online.
